How to select appropriate water jet?
A water jet mainly consists of a CNC cutting platform and a high pressure pump. There are many types of cutting platforms and high pressure pumps, and they can be combined freely.
Ⅰ. Selection of high pressure pump: the high pressure pump is the core of the machine performance, selecting a high pressure pump firstly needs considering the cutting purpose:
1、For cutting soft low-density and rigidity material such as sponge, foam, expandaple polyephylene, Styrofoam, cardboard, soft offset, etc., selecting a low horsepower pump, for example, a pump with 15-30 horsepower and less than 350MPa is enough. This material is suitable for pure water cutting, as a rule, the nozzles for pure water cutting are very small (as abrasive cut is not useful for these applications), and the diameter of nozzle about 0.10-0.15mm can achieve the purpose. Multiple cutting heads can be selected for simultaneous cutting according production quantity, this pump even allow you to mount 8 cutting heads if fitting the size of the cutting platform and the size of workpieces, selecting an appropriate high pressure pump needs calculation of the total flow, in order to save purchase cost (as a high pressure pump with flow is much more expensive) as well as save cutting cost (as a high pressure pump with larger flow need more horsepower for the cutting)。
2、For cutting material with high-density and rigidity, such as ceramics, artificial stones, marbles, granite, glass, organic glass, Acrylic, quartz glass, plastic boards, rubber, bakelite plates, aluminium plates, iron plates, stainless steel, tool steel, copper plates, titanium plates, hard alloy material, etc., it is necessary to choose the high pressure pumps with large horsepower and large flow, and abrasive cutting is required, so that the cutting energy mainly comes from abrasive, high pressure water is just the carrier of abrasive cutting, larger flow high pressure water is required for larger abrasive carrying capacity, therefore selecting high pressure pumps with large flow can achieve the purpose. Experiences tell us that the most appropriate diameters of the nozzle and the mixing tube of the single cutting head are 0.36mm/1.02mm (0.014”/0.04”), and this match can meet the cutting efficiency published data from top water jet manufacturers in the world. However, as the high pressure pump provided with 0.36mm nozzles and with the maximal cutting pressure 380MPa at least requires 50 horsepower, this is used as the standard of a single-head water jet of abrasive cutting. Similarly, if two cutting heads are required for abrasive cutting, a high pressure pump with 75-100 horsepower is suitable; and four heads require the configuration of a high pressure pump with 150-200 horsepower。
